Dakota may have been procrastinating. There were, after all, still a few piles of boxes – tape still intact – sitting in the apartment. He’d gotten to the important things already. He was a compulsive list maker, often filling up sticky notes with little squares to check off, tasks to do penciled in beside them.
He rarely actually did check things off. Not to say he didn’t do them, but often times making to do lists was something he did when bored somewhere, a nice way to channel his thoughts towards productivity when stuck doing nothing. In any case, whether checked or no, lists with important tasks like “turn in proof of renter’s insurance,” “check bank account,” “buy shower curtain,” and (thank god) “buy mattresses!!” had already been finished. And important boxes, ones that said BEDROOM – SHEETS and BEDROOM – CLOTHES had been dealt with.
So it was hardly causing him any inconvenience that the ones emblazoned with things like LINEN CLOSET and KITCHEN – GLASSES (or, to be entirely honest, KITCHEN – anything) weren’t completely unpacked yet. Or dealt with beyond being pushed into the corners of their perspective rooms. Except LINEN CLOSET. Their apartment was a real find, but it wasn’t the type to have a linen closet. They’d likely actually have to move into a house for that sort of thing.
In any case, nothing was critical, but there were plenty of things for him to do and he wasn’t doing them. The weather was too lovely. Not the day to be sorting through boxes of towels and silverware. Coffee was a wondrous liquid. It could wake you up when you were falling asleep, it helped you pull an all nighter when you needed to study for the exam you had the next morning, and it was simply amazing. Dakota loved his coffee, it was what kept him going most of the time and this morning he really needed it. He had been awake until three when he should have been preparing lessons and marking exams, researching what had gone wrong in the classroom.
The students wouldn't be too bothered if they didn't get their exams back right away, right? He hoped as much. It wasn't enough that he had had barely any sleep, but he had also woken up late. He had planned to up by six so he could plan the day's lesson and then go get breakfast and a second coffee that would be a great deal better than what he would have made himself when he had woken up, he was pretty terrible at coffee. But instead he was going to have to plan the lessons while he drank his first coffee and ate breakfast at the Grill.
Sure, the kids could be real jerks at times, but most of them cared and wanted to learn about what he enjoyed teaching them. He drove to the Grill, people really seemed to like it there, the smell, the service and the look of the place. It was friendly enough place, or so he thought. He ordered a tall vanilla latte and a ham and cheese croissant, and found himself an unoccupied table off to the side where he could work on his class planning.
