The night was growing only more tiresome. Michael had never been one of those guys that liked to stay out all night and live life in the dark. The fact he was being forced into it wasn't very fun. For the most part, it had been different and strange at the start. Sort of exciting. But now he just missed living in the daylight like any normal human. Now it just felt like it dragged and the dark made him feel enclosed in some strange environment. It really wasn't what people made it out to be.
He was meant to be heading straight back home in order to keep an eye on things, but Michael felt like taking a break and having a little detour. Besides, he could keep his ears open as he went. Once he had a cup of coffee, he headed towards the park. His skin burned against the cup but the feeling was welcomed. It sent warmth up through him and it was only better when he took a sip of the warm liquid.
He closed his eyes and smiled to himself slightly as he continued to walk through the park. Nobody else seemed to be wandering around. Either he was alone or the shadows were hiding the creeps. He wasn't as afraid of them anymore, he'd gotten over that because it was necessary. He opened his eyes again and saw an oak tree near by. He headed towards it and sat down, leaning against the bark, raising the cup to his lips for another drink of the coffee. What felt like a cold breeze washed over him and Michael shivered, taking another drink of his coffee.
There was suddenly the sound of music near by and he wanted to find the source. At first, he was confused. He didn't seem to be in the park anymore. He was in the middle of the city, with noises all around and people walking past. Michael looked around, dazed and worried. Had he blacked out and wandered into the city or something? No, there was something off about this place. It wasn't even that he had just appeared here.
The sun was setting, and he could feel his own spirits sinking with it. Meanwhile, its smile was growing bigger the darker the sky became. The creature was watching him with predatory eyes, pacing along the edge of his last patch of safety. Soon, the light would be gone entirely, leaving Michael with nothing to shield him. The air felt like it was growing colder, biting at his flesh despite the late summer sun. He hugged himself, trying to suppress the full-bodied shudders.
He didn't know why he bothered - the creature could smell the terror on him, all sweat and adrenaline. It could hear his blood pressure rising and his breathing quicken, trying to supply more oxygen to his limbs so he could run away faster. There was no need to try and hide the shaking - the creature would still know, already knew, how strongly its mere presence affected him. It knew. The sun wasn't quite gone yet - he was safe, for the moment.
He could feel wood grain against his skin, digging into his lower back - a stake, tucked into the waistband of his jeans. Michael's mind continued to race, panicked thoughts tumbling over each other, but now, his wild eyes followed the it's patient movements with intent. Left, turn away from the brightness, and right through the dark again. Turn away from the lingering light, and repeat.
He might have a chance. He might, if he was fast enough, if the creature didn't see him coming. Michael slipped one arm behind his back, gripping the worn-smooth oak in one sweating palm, and began to pull it out from under the ragged hem of his shirt. It paused in it's pacing, blackened eyes smiling at him, and he froze. Found out. Caught. Condemned. He let out a low moan and trembled. His hand eased its grip.
