Elena sighed heavily as she closed her front door heading out for the day. She had school. She got in her car and headed to Mystic Falls high. She sat in first period but got nothing of it. She couldn't focus. her head was everywhere but there. What did katherine want? Why was she here? Elena sat there, now in third period with her legs crossed as she watched the ticking clock, tapping her pencil against the desk with every second that passed. Finally, the bell snapped her back to reality. Instead of heading to fourth period, Elena shoved open the doors that held Mystic Falls high and headed straight to her car. She needed to talk to Stefan. he had told her earlier that morning that he wasn't going to school today because it would be too much. He was just starting to get his blood under control and she completely understood and wouldn't push it on him. Elena found herself parking outside the Salvatore house and heading for the door. it was slightly open so Elena let herself in.
"Stefan?" She called out and heard something in the den. She walked on through and saw Damon. Elena sighed heavily rolling her eyes. She didn't need this right now. Elena hadn't talked to Damon or seen him since he tried to kill Jeremy. Elena turned to walk out of the house. How could he? Elena was Damon's friend and he completely gave her a slap to the face by doing that. it was more than that. Elena cared for Damon and he went and tried to kill the only family Elena had left. He knew she was still hurting from her parent's death also? She didn't understand his reasoning behind it. But she did know that he got extremely lucky that jeremy was wearing the ring. Elena was so furious at him. She didn't know what she would do had Damon been successful.

I hate you—the first truth, the easiest to say out loud.
Elena hated Damon. He killed her brother, in front of her, without rhyme or reason. His actions justified her hatred. He deserved nothing less and to forgive him would be short of betraying her family, her brother. Damon knew this. He understood it with blinding clarity, the guilt attached to it barely concealed in his taunting. It was eating him inside to know he couldn't make it right, that he didn't know how. Damon could hurt Elena, worse than physical pain, because he knew her and lost control in the ways she feared he would.
He could never do it directly but sometimes it was more devastating to watch the horror unfold before you, at the hand of the person you trusted with your own life. He said the words that made her sound like she was no different from Katherine—the evil that she never wanted to become. And never to be forgotten—Damon killed Jeremy. He didn't know how to love her. Damon only understood obsession, longing and desire—he lived with these long enough. But vulnerability, selflessness and guilt—these were emotions impossible to a man who was told so many times he wasn't worthy.
Damon understood little about the trouble with love but he knew he needed her forgiveness. He started with humor and sarcasm, hoping his wit would wear her down. He moved on to saying the words that they both wanted to hear, no matter how untrue—he saw the ring, he knew Jeremy wouldn't die. Then he was blunt in asking if it was irreparable—their friendship, whatever everything else that was between them, all of it. But loving her meant he would tell her his tragic little secret.
"I need to know the truth. When you broke Jeremy's neck, did you know he was wearing the ring?"
"No."
No excuse, no apology would ever be enough. The disappointment on Elena's face as he'd uttered the single syllable answer erased all hope that she would let him in her soul ever again. It could not be undone. Damon wanted to fight but he couldn't escape the guilt, knowing he hurt the one person who ever tried to understand him, protect him and see someone in him worth saving. Elena saved him again, leapt over fire, begged and pleaded with her best friend to keep him alive. It was just like that night in Atlanta, back when he barely understood the power she held over him. All he knew then was that she refused to walk away or watch him die, to be swallowed up by flames that would claim his undead life.
The desire to read into her actions shot madly through him, tearing at his heart, daring it to hope. But he looked at his hands and he knew what he had done. He had crossed a line and he had no right to even look back. He knew he was deluding himself, thinking she would forgive him after one little piece of truth. He shook his head. This was reality. He could only watch her and pretend none of it mattered anymore. His role was to be cunning, take risks no one else would, and do everything to protect her. For both their sakes, their collective sanity, he needed to play his part as the brother no one wanted. Besides, if she wanted to play rough then he'd be damn happy to comply. As far as he knew Stefan was still in New York, so he spent the better part of the evening entertaining himself.
"Stefan..?"
His mouth was attached to the throat of a young girl, drinking the nectar of life in sips like it was fine wine. Her friend, in a state of near unconsciousness in a chair nearby. He lifted his head at the sound of Elena's voice, crimson colouring his predatory mouth and eyes gleaming dark like the sea on a stormy night. In the light of her sudden presence the face of an animal slowly drifted away, but the darkness of his eyes remained, reminiscent of his fragile bond with humanity. He quickly dismissed his previous company, looking deep into their minds and sweetening their thoughts before he let them leave, scarves around their necks and sweet memories in their pretty little heads.
He poured himself a drink, standing completely still and observing while he tossed down the expensive liquid, replacing the empty glass with another before the first on had finished its burning trail. His appearance was slightly rumpled, messy dark hair, open shirt, and a strained expression. "You should go, I'm in no state for entertaining tonight", he said silently, his voice deep and serious, but with a tiny hint of softness.

Elena watched as Damon tried to suck the life from those poor girls. Earlier, before he killed Jeremy, Elena would have tried to talk some sense into him. She would try saying that he didn't need to be like that, he didn't need to hurt anyone. but now? Now Elena had no hope for the lost Salvatore brother. It was clear that he would never be the guy Elena expected. Why did she even have expectations for him? She didn't know. But she did see how well Stefan controlled himself. Damon tried to act as if it was the right thing to do "as a vampire" but his younger brother was living proof against that. Elena could tell that Damon was hurt, but why? Because she was mad? Elena had every damn right to be mad. She had every right to never talk to him again, to forever be disgusted with him. And right now, that's exactly what she was. Disgusted. Elena turned to walk away once it was clear that Stefan wasn't there, choking back tears thinking back to the previous night. She heard Damon speak and stopped in her tracks, with her back to him. She cocked her head to the side for a second, then back. She then dropped her bag and turned around.
Elena headed right to the den where he was standing and walked swiftly, right up to him with tears dropping from her eyes. Elena quickly brought up her hand before he reacted and slapped him hard, straight across the face. "HOW COULD YOU!?" She yelled at him, obviously very upset. The tears were streaming now. "I was the only one that cared Damon!!!! The only one that saw something in you and THIS? THIS is the thank you and the respect I get?" She asked him as she yelled at him. "I take it back. Everything. Everything I once said to you that is slightly redeemable about you, I take it all back. Because you managed to prove me wrong...It's disgusting the rise you get out of hurting people. Damnit Damon, He was all I had left!! Do you understand that? Do you even get that? I know you're not a man of family and don't appreciate them, but you know what family means to me. " She said as her face got red and hot as the tears flowed like a waterfall ass he stood there yelling at him. She had held all of that in for so long since it happened. Elena stood up straighter and brought both hands to the top of her head as she pushed her long, messy hair back and took a deep breath. "What did I do to you to deserve that? What did Jeremy do?" She said wanting to know what provoked him.
