There were very few cases where Nikki’s secret skills couldn’t help her, and even in those cases, most of the times, a simple bat of her eyelashes was still enough to help her out. But in extreme cases, such as this one, she actually had to go through with the process and get things done the hard, long way. Why on earth would their English Literature teacher force her to read Wuthering Heights? It was known to be such a hardcore Emo book! And while most things Emo, especially the music, didn’t bother her, Emo reading was sure to. Well, reading, period.
She sighed and finally managed to get up from her chair where she had been sitting since the calls had started and not moved an inch, not even when their teacher told them to go to the library and find their designated books so they could start reading ASAP. Some people sure were happy to have the whole class to just sit and read, some people were annoyed, however, and would much rather have their school time to learn something and read at home. Nikki didn’t fit into any of the groups. She would much rather have her school time to sleep, then get home, eat, and sleep some more.
She grabbed her bag, which had not even been open yet, and put it on, across her chest, like a messenger bag, then, after being sent out for the millionth time by Mrs. Norris, their teacher, she dragged herself outside the classroom and out into the hallway, but before she left, she peeked into Mrs. Norris’s mind long enough to hear the words “Lazy little shit!” in there, despite the forced smile her least favorite teacher had on her red lipstick-covered lips and teeth. ”That skirt makes you look like a hippo” Nikki said into Mrs. Norris’s mind, but to her teacher, it had sounded like her own voice, rather than Nikki’s, so when the teenager peeked back in, she saw her teacher moving around, trying to see how she looked without the help of a mirror.
Nikki grinned to herself as she walked down the hallway towards the library, her boots echoing in the empty hallways. All her classmates were already there, and the other students were in class, so she was the only one out there at that time. She arrived soon enough, thankful for having learnt how to block out unwanted thoughts from her mind. Back when she was younger, she listened to everyone and everything, whether or not she wanted to, but not anymore.
She walked into the quiet library, noticing that some people had already found their books and were scattered across the place in random tables, some alone, and some in groups. Instead of doing it the right way and asking someone for help, she began to scan people’s minds for the right words. She walked down the aisle, catching random stuff, sentences, lose words, book titles… Her blue eyes canned the place, pretending that it was the books she was looking at while her eyes travelled from person to person trying to find the right one.
Until her eyes fell on the right person. She was pretty, brunette, long hair. Nikki had seen her around; Meredith something. Nikki walked up to where she was and reached for one of the copies of Wuthering Heights in front of her. ”Found it.” she said, a pleased smile on her face.
