Meredith listened to the light thuds of her shoes hitting the gravel of the sidewalk as she walked. The day was a bit gloomy and a slight breeze added to the chill. The gray clouds in the sky threatened rain, but Meredith didn't think it would happen until tomorrow or maybe tonight. Either way though, it was annoyingly chilly out. Meredith pulled her jacket more around her body to keep out the cold. She didn't get the wacky weather of this town. She had seen sunshine all the way here, but once they hit town it was cloudy. Just her luck. Raining on her welcome home parade.
Oh well. It wasn't like a bit of rain was going to bother her. The whole thing just seemed... eerie to her. Like the clouds weren't normal and shouldn't be there. But that was ridiculous. It was probably just her nerves getting to her. And yes, she was nervous. Contrary to popular belief, she did get nervous. She didn't show that she was but it did happen. Even now, anyone looking at her would not be able to tell. She looked like she was more bored then nervous, like she was on her way to accomplish some menial task that she'd rather not bother with. But on the inside she was feeling the butterflies.
This was because she was about to visit someone who had once been her best friend, but that she hadn't seen in about four years. Meredith had known Elena since before they had started school together and they had been together, along with Bonnie and Caroline, until Meredith's parents had dragged her off to live in New York. They claimed they 'wanted to make it big in the city'. Meredith believed her father just wanted to live somewhere he could get Chinese food at three in the morning. Not that he hadn't been successful in New York, which had made the whole moving back thing even weirder. So after all the painful goodbyes and having to force herself to accept that she would never see any of her friends again, they were back. Just like that. If Meredith hadn't preferred wanted this so much, she'd be pretty upset with her father right now. Of course, he was going to get her a car now, so she probably would have gotten over it easy.
Meredith's eyes spotted the familiar stone path that led up to her old friend's house. They trailed along it and met with the two story white house that looked unchanged from the long time gap between now and the last time she had seen it. Now it was the moment of truth. Meredith had been filling her brain with all sorts of possibilities that could lead to this ending in a bad way. Four years was a long time and people could change a lot in that time. Meredith herself, aside from the physical aspects of growing up, was pretty much the same as far as she could remember. She figured Elena would be different in the physical aspect, but the problem was what was she like personality wise these days? "Well," Meredith thought, "Guess I'll find out."
She turned up the walkway and headed up to the door. A strange feeling of deja vu and nostalgia swept over her as she stood on the porch. She was whisked away to the many times she had stood here in the past. So funny how back then standing here was nothing, but after four years in New York standing here was hugely significant. Everything looked the same as it did then too. The benches, there to sit upon and simply enjoy the day. Many memories of Meredith and her friends sitting on them as they talked about everything came flooding up to her mind. Even that old American flag was still hanging off the wall. Meredith almost felt like she had gone back in time.
Meredith shook all the memories away for the moment. Those could be enjoyed another time. Right now was for the present and to see Elena; to see how she was, what she was like, and any other updates the girl might want to share. Right now was a time when Meredith was hoping to get a friend back. One of her best friends. Meredith lifted one of her slender, olive colored hands and knocked on the dark wooden surface of the door. Much like the day, it was cool to the touch. Then she fussed a bit straightening her jacket, but stopped when she realized what she was doing. Stupid nerves. Her usual calm over took her outward appearance once again. She looked relaxed as ever as she waited for someone to answer her knock. And a small smile played at her lips, the most evidence of her inner excitement and nerves that she allowed.

At this moment Elena was sitting at home, in the living room with Jeremy and Jenna. They were sitting on in the couch and played a game. They were laughing and having a good time. It wasn’t that often they were sitting together and have fun. But when they did, it was always very nice. Elena really liked these moments, and they especially got her happy, if she was down. So she knew what she should do, if she was having a bad time. But her having a bad time?... No, that wouldn’t happen, unless she hadn’t seen Stefan in a long time, - or if they maybe broke up, what of course wouldn’t happen. But she saw him every day, so no… she wasn’t having a bad time that often.
Elena looked out of the window, and saw what the weather was like. If it should wonder anyone, then it was exactly like always, since Damon reached the town. She looked at Jenna and Jeremy. “Looks like it’s going to rain very soon,” she said. They looked out of the window and agreed with her. Maybe it wouldn’t start raining right now, but very soon. She looked at the game again. It was her turn. She made some move.
Once again she looked out of the window, before she turned her attention to her brother and aunt again. “God I’m starving… aren’t you hungry?” she asked them, and then she got up from the couch. She walked out of the living room, and out in the kitchen. She found some white bread, some butter and some cold cuts. Jenna and Jeremy went to the kitchen and began to make their lunch. When they’d made it, they sat down at the table, and began to eat.
While Elena was taking the last bid of her food, she heard someone knock on the door. The three of them looked at each other. None of them were expecting someone. “I’ll answer it,” she said to the two of them. She got up, and walked through the living room, out to the front door, and then she opened. A lot of feelings wandered through her body. It was… what… about four years since she’d seen the person who she faced. It was Meredith. “Meredith!” she said and she lit up in a big smile. She was so happy to see her again. Back in the time when she left town, Elena didn’t thought that she’d ever see Meredith again, but now she was standing at Elena’s front door.

Meredith didn't have to wait too long. She could hear the foot steps in the house making their way from the back. They arrived on the other side of the door and paused and then there was a bit of a rattling sound as the knob was handled and Meredith watched as it twisted around. There was a sound of suction and dark, wooden door swung open showing a face Meredith easily recognized. She was older, of course. Meredith's memory was that of a thirteen year old, and puberty did a lot to a person's body. She was taller now, and developed. Her face was no longer round, but pointed and defined with higher cheek bones. But her eyes were the same. Perhaps a little wiser then when she had last seen them, but they still carried that strength Meredith remembered so well.
Elena paused a moment to look at her with shock. Meredith couldn't blame her, they had all thought she would never be back here again. Meredith certainly wasn't complaining about what how things had turned out in the end. She'd probably have to thank whatever it was that made her parents decide to move back. Meredith just smiled as she waited for Elena to decide that she wasn't dreaming, and watched as the girl's face brightened with a big smile. Now that's a reaction she liked to see.
“Meredith!”
"Nothing wrong with your memory then." Meredith replied dryly. Then she grinned at the other girl. So many memories came flooding back to her. Pretty much her entire childhood had involved Elena in one way or another. Meredith had known her longer then she could remember and they had been inseparable until her parents decided to take up that challenge. While they had only lost four years, which compared to the decade plus before hand, it still seemed like too much was lost. They had lost four very important years and Meredith had been unhappy going through them without her friends. A fact she truly only realized now that she was standing here. Seeing Elena really drove home how mush she had missed her.
"I'm back!" Meredith declared, spreading her arms to the side as if to present herself to viewers, "And this isn't just a visit either, I'm back in a permanent way." she added. Meredith would love to see her parents try to pull her away a second time. Good luck with that. It had been hard enough to leave the first time, she wasn't going to do it again. She just hoped her friends were willing to have her back, a lot could change in four years - especially the teen ones. There could be a number of reasons that would result in them not having room for her anymore. But she wasn't dwelling on those possibilities. She would find out the answers soon enough, and worrying about them was very pointless.

A lot of memories were running through Elena’s mind. It was memories of herself and Meredith. They’d always spent a lot of time together, and they’d always had a lot of fun… Yeah, she really missed those times, but now Meredith was back. She was really back, and Elena was glowing of happiness.
“Oh my God! You’re really back!” she said, and almost whined it. And then she heard Meredith say, that it wasn’t just a visit, but she was permanently back. Now the whine came, and Elena began hopping, sort of, because she was so happy. She opened her arms, and then she closed them around Meredith in a huge hug. “I’ve really missed you, girl!” she said while she was hugging her.
She stepped back again, and then she took Meredith’s arm and pulled her inside the house. She closed the door behind them and smiled at her. “I can’t believe, that you’re really back…” No, she couldn’t believe it, but eventually she would. The reason why she couldn’t was, that it’d been so many years since she’d left town, and now that she was back… well… it just seemed unrealistic to her! But hell yeah she was happy. No doubt.
She walked out to the kitchen, at pulled Meredith with her. She stopped up when they stood in front of Jeremy and Jenna. Then she smiled at them and said: “Look who’s back!” Jenna smiled at Meredith and then she got up from the chair, she was sitting on. “You’re really back?” she asked, before she continued. “Well no matter what, it’s good to have you here. Welcome home, Meredith.” Then she gave her a short hug, and went to the chair again. Elena looked at her. “Are you hungry?” she asked. She couldn’t know if she’d already ate or if it was many hours ago. And the food was still out, so if she was hungry, then she absolutely shouldn’t starve.

Meredith grinned at Elena's excitement. It was always great to get a good reaction from people when you showed up. Meredith was equally excited, though she showed it less. Her grin was about as far as she'd let it go, but that was just the way she had always been. Calm and reserved. A lot of people mistook her lack of reaction for indifference, but Meredith wasn't worried that Elena would. Meredith had always been this way and Elena knew her well. Or at least she did, though Meredith imagined she wouldn't have forgotten.
Elena came at Meredith with her arms open and Meredith wrapped her own arms around her old friend. She embraced her tightly, relishing being back with true friends. You couldn't just leave connections like this, they were too strong. When you leave them, they don't break. They pull and stretch, following you wherever you go and causing pain. And ache that never leaves you while the connection is strained. The only way to fix it is to follow it home. And that's what Meredith had done now. A great weight she didn't even know she had residing within her lifted from her heart. She wished she had never left, because this was where she belonged.
"I missed you too." Meredith responded. Meredith pulled back and smiled at her. Then Elena grabbed her by the arm and dragged her into the house. Meredith let out a small chuckle. She may look older, but Elena definitely had qualities Meredith remembered about her. Like getting really excited and dragging her around. Meredith let herself be steered inside of the home. The decor was pretty much the same with a few differences. Mostly like she had remembered it though. Elena closed the door and then resumed pulling Meredith further into the house. Meredith allowed it, still smirking.
They entered the kitchen, which again was relatively the same as Meredith remembered it. After all, it had only been four years. While a lot could change in that time frame, it didn't have to. One thing that was a surprise was who was there. Meredith had only met Elena's Aunt Jenna a few times over her fourteen years in Mystic Falls. The woman had moved away from town after graduating and didn't live here. Meredith found it an odd coincidence that she had arrived on the same day as a visit from Elena's aunt. Meredith smiled at her all the same though and accepted the small hug with one of her own.
"Thanks, Ms. Sommers." Meredith said, not sure if she was still 'Ms' or not. She figured she got it right when Jenna went back to the table without correcting her. From Jenna's casual appearance, Meredith thought she looked pretty 'at home'. She must be here for a prolonged stay. She hadn't done that before, as far as Meredith could remember. Maybe something had change to warrant a longer stay.
“Are you hungry?”
"No, I'm alright, thanks." Meredith replied with a smile, looking back at Elena and returning her attention to the girl instead of the one major and unexpected difference in the Gilbert household that Meredith could see so far, "I already had lunch." Meredith had made sure to so that she wasn't eating their food on her first visit, offered or not. It wasn't a proper guest thing to do to arrive at your host place unexpected and hungry. If you were invited for a meal, that was different, but Meredith had just shown up so she made sure she wouldn't impose too much.
"So, I'm not imposing on any plans showing up here like this am I?" Meredith asked Elena. She didn't want the girl to be canceling any thing on her account. They could catch up later if Elena already had plans. Meredith watched for Elena's reaction and waited to get an answer.

No doubt Elena was happy to see Meredith. Still… it was about four years since she’d saw her the last time. Then she wondered… did anyone else beside Elena know that she was back? Probably not, cause then she must have heard it. She must’ve arrived this morning or something. “Anyone else who knows you’re back?” she asked with at big smile that stretched from ear to ear. She was sure that a least Bonnie would like jump into her arms. But Caroline? What would she do? Elena wasn’t quite sure. Well no matter what, Elena just hoped that everyone would greet Meredith with open arms, and wish her welcome back.
Elena smiled when Meredith thanked Jenna, but most of all she smiled because she titled her. She didn’t have to, but she did it, just to be polite. And then she heard the words, she expected Jenna would say: “Just call me Jenna.” Elena looked at Jenna and smiled at her. She loved her aunt for being so open and not a stupid bitch or something like that. Jenna was living in the house permanently, but she didn’t back in the time when Meredith still lived in Mystic Falls, so that was already one change that Meredith didn’t knew about. And she had to know about Elena’s parents’ death, ‘cause eventually she would discover that something was wrong, now she hadn’t seen the Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert. But it would of course take a few days before she would start wondering where they were.
“Okay that’s good, ‘cause we can’t having you running around starving,” Elena replied to Meredith, who said that she’d already ate lunch. But on the other side, it wouldn’t look like Meredith to arrive starving somewhere unless she was invited to dinner, so actually it didn’t surprise Elena that she’d already ate. “But if you’re getting hungry, then we do have a lot of food.” Elena smiled at her again.
“Nope. You’re not imposing anything,” she replied, when Meredith asked if she wasn’t imposing any plans by showing up like that. “We’re just having a day home all of us, to enjoy each other’s company,” she told her. No she absolutely weren’t imposing any plans of the day. And they’d absolutely hadn’t planned any picnic or any other trip outside the house, ‘cause the weather was gray and cold like the most of the days in Mystic Falls.

She could see the scene in her head, clear as day. The miraculous Gilbert device floated before her as she chanted a spell in a low voice. Her eyes were closed, but she could see the lights from the flames in the fireplace, moving about as if they were alive. She could remember the exact feeling, the not-knowing whether or not what she was doing was the right thing to do. Those… creatures… had turned Mystic Falls around completely, affected the lives of so many people in so many ways, and yet she couldn’t forget Elena’s look… Had she done the right thing?
She didn’t get to linger on that any longer; a loud car horn dragged her roughly back to reality, and just in time. She found herself well over a red light, inches away from going into a busy intersection head on. She blushed softly and put her car on reverse, the cars behind her awkwardly moving about so she could adjust herself. ”Sorry!” she said, putting her head through the window and raising her hand in a sympathetic gesture.
When the light turned green again, she gripped the steering wheel tighter and focused on the task at hand. She stepped on the gas pedal and set out towards her best friend’s house. A right turn here, and a left turn into the second street and she was just a few yards away. She pulled up in front of Elena’s house and turned off the engine. She didn’t, however, get out of the car just yet.
Everytime she faced Elena after not having gotten rid of the invention that had changed the possibility of changing their small town so drastically, she faced her guilt for having lied to her best friend, as well as risking Stefan’s after-life more than that of his sociopath brother.
Was it the right thing to do? She felt deep down that it was. It always felt good to feel that you’d done the right thing. And believing that she’d done it to protect the people she loved made it all that much better. But the guilt was still there, ready to jump at her with every chance it got. It didn’t help matters that Caroline was in the hospital either. Talk about snowball effect.
She took a deep breath and pushed open the door, slowly getting out and adjusting her clothes before going around to the passenger side to grab the grocery bag with the chips, as well as the blockbuster one with the few movies she’d rented for them. She pushed the door with her knee and rushed towards the front door. What a brilliant idea, wearing shorts on such a chilly day. Her heels clicked noisily against the smooth pavement as she rushed to the door, her hair being successfully blown all over her face. She felt like she was in one of those wind tunnels you saw on TV.
She gathered both bags in one hand and knocked loudly with her free one. ”Elena!” she called out, in a loud enough voice to be heard clearly. ”Open up, it’s cold out here!”
