If given a choice between whiskey or bourbon, Koda would have to go with bourbon. He couldn't say why, exactly, only that the flavor differed just enough. Finding a good bourbon in a dive like this, though, was like trying to find decent food up north. Sure, a person could survive on what they passed for food, but one couldn't enjoy the flavors and spices. Of course, to most of the people he'd met, salt was the spice of choice. He had resigned himself to drinking a somewhat decent whiskey instead.
He was nursing his drink, not really in the mood for company, but he was letting boredom get the best of him. Dakota didn't do bored. Koda with nothing to do was like getting a child high on sugar and setting them loose in an antique shop. Nothing good ever came of it. His eyes scanned the patrons of the bar. They ranged from business men who looked uncomfortable and out of place to a few who looked downright scary. Not scary to Koda, of course, very little frightened him after the years he spent on the road. Scary in a way that would frighten the average patron.
He'd had no luck finding a good poker game tonight. It seemed as though, up north, a good number of people weren't up for the challenge. God, but he hated the north. It was cold, it was wet, the food was terrible, and it was his own damned fault that he'd ended up there.
Distracted by the loud beat of the song that reached his ears, he flashed a smile at the girl on the corner. An instinctive reaction, but he had done it a lot. A harmless flirt, of course her boyfriend next to her wasn’t pleased. He barely batted an eye at the man. He would have to play the hand he was dealt and see what came of it. Perhaps something more interesting than the click of billiards, sub-par whiskey, and that annoying music that filled the air would come along.

Doing homework on this fine Friday evening wasn`t a first choice for anyone, so why would Alex be any different. But there she was in the back corner of the mystic grill, her place of work, doing her three days old English essay. Not her fault she kept forgetting about the damned essay on Hamlet, not her fault it was so boring. English was one of her favourite classes, but Shakespeare was not. It was like watching paint peel, boring and even boringer as time passes. Bad metaphor, like Shakespeare.
Grey hat on the brunettes head of the of, she signed a sigh of relief and slammed Hamlet shut. Done. Until, the next one. Relaxing her tense hand muscles from all the chicken scratch on her document before her, Alex was content with her 8 page essay. One of her better pieces. It had just been a thorn in her side ,just as her teacher was for not handing the stupid thing in. Now he could shut up and leave her in peace.
Shoving the novel and papers in her bag Alex headed to the bar for a drink to her success. It was a tradition to celebrate after a hard day work, or a partial hard day’s work. Plus she got a little discount for working at the place, which saved her money.
The music was soothing to her ears and voices of the community around her had broken her bubble of silence, for the better. Walking tall to the bar with her bag over her shoulder with determination in her eyes, she took a seat next the a cute guy dressed darkly. Defiantly a looker in her books, even if he seemed familiar in one way or another. Shaking off the feeling ,she turned and smiled at the man. Alex was craving a conversation.
”What ya drinking there, whatever it s it looks good.”

As he sat there, he started trying to think up ways to get out of having to attend football practices next week. The team was renowned for it’s losing streaks and being a clairvoyant, he knew the streak was going to remain that way, at least until after the next game. He didn’t see further than that, not that he would want to. If he wanted to watch bad football he could just turn on the sports network rather than have it pounding away in his mind.
Vengeance occurred to him momentarily and he was debating giving his class a surprise quiz come Monday, but he was shaken from his reverie by the sound of someone’s voice. He looked over and gave her a once-over. She was incredibly hot, though she looked a little young to be sitting at a bar. He wasn’t about to point that fact out though. He had a feeling of Déjà vu. Like he knew her from somewhere. No matter, he’d find out soon enough.
“Uh..Jack Daniel’s, neat, no ice. Not my preferred brand but it does it’s job. Can I buy you a drink?” He glanced over at the bartender and nodded towards the girl. “She’s my sister.” He hoped that would deter any questions about identification if, in fact, she was as young as she looked. On looks alone he would place her between nineteen and twenty, not old enough to drink in this state, but old enough that he didn’t seem like a child predator. At least he hoped that was the case.
If she was fifteen or something, no doubt Sheriff Forbes would have him in cuffs so fast it’d make his head spin. He pushed those awful thoughts out of his mind and decided to concentrate on the matter at hand. He was sitting in a bar with an insanely hot girl. “Name’s Dakota, and who might you be? I know I’d remember someone who looked like you.” He took another sip of his drink before setting it down and pushing it away slightly, indicating he was more interested in her than the drink. “You come here often or is this just my lucky day?”

The guy was hot stuff, Alex could give him that all right, but she had seen him somewhere, but then again she got that feeling from a lot of people. Probably because of her lovely sixth sense, though she tends not to be able to see dead people, that’s Haley Joel Olsements job.Adjusting the sleeves of her grey cammy, Alex became more comfortable in her seat. No reason to be having butterflies, she wasn`t 13 anymore.
”Yes , gin and tonic please.”
She replied happily to the offer, and for her cover. Ok, she wasn`t old enough to drink yet, but you gotta have fun while your youth lasts. Her mom lets her drink at home, but not enough to get smashed. And anyway if Alex was ided she could take care of that in her own way. The bartender wouldn`t bother Alex and the guy because in some weird way they looked like they could be siblings, plus who would want to mess with this guy.
”Interesting name for an interestingly hot guy. Names Alex.”
A simple nod was required to thank the bar tender after being received her drink. Gin and tonic was always her favourite, simple to make but good none the less. But the matter at hand was this strangely attractive guy, Dakota that Alex had a feeling that she knew from somewhere who they were having a drink at a bar together even though she was under age. Now that was quiet a situation.
”Depends, like having a good reason to come here.”
She stated fluttering her long eyelashes at the man. Somewhere at the back of her head, a voice was telling her that there was something wrong with this whole situation, but Alex as normal, couldn`t hear that little voice. This was a sort of celebration for Alex, or completing a painfully long essay, a reward in a way. And anyway, flirting with a random guy never hurt. If only Alex knew who sat before her.
