* ALARIC SALTZMAN !
I was right about Mystic Falls. There's evil here. I can feel it... everywhere.
full name: Alaric Saltzman
nicknames: Rick
date of birth: (in the book he's about 22, but in the TV show he looks around 30) So I will say April 2, 1980.
hometown: Boston
species: Human
abilities: Has the knowledge of a typical vampire hunter. He knows how to fight and kill one pretty well (of course Damon killed him that one time but next time Alaric "won't miss").
height: 6'1
hair: brown
eyes: blue
play by: Matt Davis
likes:
- Jenna
- History
- Cutting people slack
- Doing what's right
- An intellectual conversation
- Being a teacher
- Getting up early
dislikes:
- Vampires
- Damon (but he's willing to work with him if need be)
- Feeling betrayed
- Insecurity
- People who don't care about what's right for the kids
- Grief
- Hurting/killing people
strengths:
-He knows a lot about vampires and is not afraid to kill one or several (or try to).
-He's very intelligent and strategic
-He's brave, and will do whatever it takes to achieve what ever goal is important to him
-He's charming and friendly
weaknesses:
- He can be easily blindsided when it comes to love
- He can sometimes overestimate his limits, especially when he's passionate about something
- He's very blunt sometimes (and it might come across as a bit much in social situations)
- Sometimes is too eager to see the good in people (vampires), and sometimes gets disappointed in the end.
fears:
- That he isn't "enough" for those he cares about.
- That he really is wrong about the good he sees in people
- That vampires, again, will ruin the lives of those he cares about
secrets:
- He's studied vampires and has learned how to "hunt" them after he thought his wife died because of Damon.
personality:
Alaric is a friendly, very charming man with good intentions. He wants to do what's right for people, its just simply who he is as a person. To those he cares about and loves, he loves deeply, and he loves and cares about that good side of them. He sees the good side so clearly that he's sometimes oblivious (or blind) to the bad or the flaws. Mostly, he just doesn't want to accept it. Because he gives his all to a person, his confidence stands on this goal. He wants to be everything to that person and if he fails, that's what hurts the most.
Generally, he's very intelligent. He's not only intelligent in regards to book smarts (as a history teacher) but he's also very cunning. When it comes down to getting what he wants and fighting for what's right in his eyes, he's bold and brave. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty if it means doing what's right. He's also not afraid to risk his life. And if you piss him off, he's definitely not afraid to retaliate.
Upon first impression, Alaric can be extremely blunt and often times sarcastic in conversation. But he's also fun and light-hearted - he does like to have a good time with people. He likes to joke around. He enjoys a good conversation too. Behind his tough guy vampire hunter secret life, he's really a gentle soul who doesn't like to be violent. But he's willing to do so if he has to.
mother: Unknown
father: Unknown
siblings: Unknown
other family: German ancestors that lived in the American Colonies
other important people: Isobel, his undead ex wife.
history:
Alaric had a typically normal life in North Carolina. He went to college, studying history, met a beautiful girl named Isobell who studied paranormal psychology, they fell in love...next, they were supposed to live happily every after. Of course, this didn't quite go the way Alaric planned. Perhaps he should have suspected something when she stayed up at odd hours of the night, talking about strange folklore. Would it have even mattered if he did suspect something?
What he saw one night changed everything. He saw a vampire killing his wife and he couldn't do a thing about it. From that day forward, Alaric devoted his life to studying vampires and their weaknesses. No one ever found Isobel's body and the it was considered a cold case. He assumed Isobel was dead and grieved ever since. All he had left was a ring she gave him.
Alaric moved to Virgina and became the replacement history teacher for Mystic Falls High School. He met Jenna Sommers and got along well with her and they eventually started dating. After hearing about Logan from her and seeing he was in town, Alaric took it upon himself to murder him. His eye was on Damon Salvatore next. Something was familiar about him and definitely suspicious.
His suspicions were confirmed when Damon bragged about his wife being "delicious" at the Bachelor Auction. Alaric is guided by his rage and thirst for revenge when he confronts Damon but the vampire gets the upper-hand, stabbing his lung. Damon sits there and watches him die. He defends himself to Stefan by saying that he was simply telling him the truth - Isobel didn't want him anymore and that she wanted to be turned into a vampire. However, Alaric eventually revived, and realized that the ring Isobel gave him had saved him.
Afterwards, the Tomb fiasco occurred. Damon and Elena needed his help to rescue Stefan from the Tomb vampires. Alaric agrees thinking that Pearl would be able to help him find Isobel but Damon eventually admitted he lied. Alaric definitely wasn't happy about that. Yet again, he worked with Damon to investigate a house that Isobel lived in. After finding nothing, Alaric says he gives up searching for her.
That is until Isobel found him. She taunted him into telling Elena to meet with her and Alaric had a hard time believing that the wife he used to know was no longer there. After succeeding in her motives for coming back to town, she prepares to leave again, but before she does, she compels Alaric to believe that she simply just left him. She tells him that his heart is free.

"Okay, I think we've had enough of Mystic Falls week long devotion to the Founding colonies." Alaric said, turning around to the class from the chalkboard and surveying the room. Its something he did out of absolute habit. It was the only way to survive as a teacher. If you don't keep an eye on the students, they'll sneak by you. And by 'sneak by'...that could mean anything from sneaking off into a day dream or sneaking out of the room. No way in hell was he going to let either of that happen. He sighed heavily as he caught the many familiar students in the room, including Bonnie, Elena, and Stefan.
"...and don't think that was a stab in the dark. The evidence is written on the completely blank stares on your faces." He gave a small smirk, amused. Some students let out quiet laughs.
Alaric grabbed the chalk and started writing on the board. "We're moving on to the first world war, now--"
The bell rang. Alaric turned around and went to his desk as the students rushed to get up and out of the class room. The students handed in their assignments as the headed out the door. "Read chapter 5 for tomorrow guys. I might have the audacity to give you a pop quiz." There were anticipated groans and Alaric grinned. "I know, I know. It's the end of the world. If it is, I'd be prepared for something like that if I were you." Alaric grabbed the papers and put them in his desk. Underneath was his bag of vampire weapons, hidden away. They were always there. He was always prepared. But something about them today made him uneasy. Some nostalgic sense of self before he became...this. Before...everything. Before the empty blank space in his mind that nagged at him sometimes.
He looked up from his desk and noticed Stefan and Elena had stayed behind. The looks on their faces were serious.
Pressing his lips together, Alaric sighed, sitting on the desk, his arms crossed over his chest.
"What is it now?"
